7 Tips For Smooth Sailing

Summer is officially here, which means people up and down the country will be free for a week or two to pursue their hobbies and past times. Families may plan a trip on a barge, or a yachting expedition. To the experienced sailor, taking the boat out for a jaunt on the bay or the open ocean can be an extremely rewarding and liberating experience. For the journeyman sailor, yachting can quickly become stressful, even dangerous, if they fail to follow certain procedures. The following are seven tips that every sailor should follow in order to have a smooth trip out on the water.

Inspecting The Sail Boat

Many procedures need to be completed before the sailboat departs the dock, in order to ensure smooth sailing. Ensuring that everything on the sailboat is in working order is essential to having a trouble free time out on the water. Do not over load your boat, make sure all gauges are checked and the deck is washed and tidied. These are some of the many procedures you should follow before setting sail. Everything should be inspected, from the anchor to the navigation system, in order to guarantee that everything is in tip-top, ship shape before leaving port.

Learning On Other Sailing Trips

If an individual owns his/her sailboat, it is extremely likely that he or she has been sailing with proficient sailors before. It is very important to pitch in when necessary on someone else's sailboat. Not only will the captain appreciate it, but more importantly, one will learn a great deal more if they get their hands dirty when taking part in such duties as pulling in the anchor and lines to raising and lowering sails. It is a great way to expedite your learning and gain natural sea faring knowledge with experience.

Packing Carefully

Packing should be done a good deal before a sail is to take place. If packing is done 5 days before a sail, other necessities will continually be added over the next few days and it is less likely you will forget to pack the essentials. It is also important that the sailor only relies on him or herself to do all of the necessary packing, this way, the gear that is present on the boat is already known. Some important items to pack are toiletries and medication, documents, passports and currency, sunglasses with a lanyard, windproof jacket, deck shoes and lip balm.

Abiding By RYA Regulations

Merchant shipping regulations require that certain equipment is aboard every ship or craft that sails in the water. If a boat is boarded by the Coast Guard and the sailor is unprepared with this equipment, some hefty fines might be in order. The equipment required includes personal floatation devices for every individual, a fire extinguisher, and emergency flares. Not only will this equipment protect the sailor from getting a fine in case the Coast Guard boards, but it also is very useful if an emergency were to arise.

Checking Weather Forecasts

This may seem like a no-brainer, but checking weather forecasts can be instrumental in preventing rough waters. Checking the weather a few days in advance, then every day till sailing day will ensure fine weather and calm seas.

Charting A Course On Paper

Although technology now exists that allows a sailor to plot a course electronically, such as GPS tackers, it can be helpful to chart it on maps as well. In the case of electronic malfunctions, a paper map will help a sailor get to where he or she needs to go.

Beware Of Going Overboard

As always, one must always be careful of falling off the sailboat. Someone going overboard and the possibility of drowning is the most dangerous threat to all members of crew. Informing the crew/passengers of the dangers of walking on the edge or running on the boat can help prevent these accidents, as can a sturdy pair of slip proof deck shoes.
Smooth sailing need not be hard with these few simple tips, you can learn some of the bare essentials every day skipper should know.

Next Best Thing to Do When You Can’t Go Fishing

If you are a true fisherman at heart, you would like everything that has fishing in it. From suspicious looking birthday cakes styled on your favorite bass, your favorite car decal is the one with the big fish with googly eyes, the best Christmas presents you’ve ever received are gift coupons of your local tackle shop . You have apps on your iPhone that lets you play fishing games when you are unable to fish for some reason.  On days that are raining or snowing too hard for you to be fishing, you are stuck at home. You might not discard the idea of watching a few movies but romcoms and chick flicks are not your thing. You are an avid outdoorsman!

Well, we have something for you.  We have made a list of the some fishing movies that you would thoroughly enjoy watching and you won’t mind being a couch potato for a while.

 1.     Jaws – One of the best ever fishing movies of all times. It is not all happy go lucky of course. Some scenes are frighteningly gory but then again- we are all ‘big tough men’!

 2.   The Perfect Storm – This is based on a true story.  Once the credit title roles, you would only wonder in awe… something like this did happen to someone indeed!

  3.   Big Fish - A touching father- son story.  Add in a bit of imagination of director Tim Burton- a 125minute worth a watch.

 4.    A River Runs Through It – Robert Redford proves his genius once again with this 1992 Oscar Winner film on fly fishing. One look at the poster and you would be drawn to the movie.  Brad Pitt is an added perk. You will know what women see in him.

5.     The Old Man and the Sea – We have all loved the book and Ernest Hemmingway.  The movies will only make you love the book more.

 6.     Grumpy Old Men – This is serious fun. The film was shot in Minnesota and it was freezing. One of the actors actually had to be hospitalized- he caught pneumonia!

 7.    Grumpier Old Men- The sequel only gets better. A complete package that makes you forget that you are not fishing but sitting back home having some good laughs.

 8.     Moby Dick- Another good ol’ classic.  You had read the book long back as a kid? This is a good chance to just go through the story once again.

 9.    Salmon Fishing In the Yemen – This recent release stars Emily Blunt and Ewan McGregor. A movie of faith and hope- the main ingredients in fishing.

 10.   Baitshop – The name is a clue enough to make you want to watch this movie.  Great comedy and plenty of some realistic fishing.

 11.  Man’s Favorite Sport – You will have to watch it to know how good and entertaining the movie actually is.

These movies are sure to keep you occupied for some time for sure. Yes, it is no way as good as fishing for sure but then again, if you can’t go fishing, at least you can have a good time on the couch. Hope you enjoyed the blog. Until next time.

Before Going On a Deep Sea Fishing Trip

There can be nothing but thrill and super excitement when fishing in waters 30 feet or deeper and at a fair distance from land. Deep sea fishing is one of the most thrilling fishing experiences an angler can experience in his lifetime. Tunas, marlins, sharks and swordfish are the most common catches. Deeps sea fishing is also known as offshore boat fishing, big game fishing and spot fishing. The thrill of riding the big waves, the majestic fish, and the excitement of the adventure is a dream come true for every fisherman.

It is completely different from normal fishing. The water is much deeper; instead of shallow waters you are atop charter boats along with a bunch of friends go deep in the sea in search of some magnificent fish. The adrenalin rush is like nothing you have ever experienced. But there are certain things one must keep in mind while fishing in the deep.

  • Be aware of the surroundings- for every angler it is important to be one with nature in order to ensure success out on the water. It is better to do a little homework about the place before you head out to the spot. Even though there is the fishing guide to assist you, it would not hurt to gather little information.
  • Dolphins and tuna often school together and thus it is important to know the difference between the two fish and not catch a dolphin instead.
  • The guide will also tell you to fish near the reef – that is where the smaller fish live and the bigger ones follow in during feeding time.
  • Motion sickness is quite common and not only for a novice but at times also for the experienced angler. It can spoil the entire trip if you fall sick. Thu stake medications before you start for the trip.
  • It is always better to go on a deep sea fishing trip with an expert. If you are a group of novice anglers you should not venture out alone. The guides know the water well and they can tell you what exactly to do to reel in the big fish. They will also be able to protect you in cases of emergency. For more information on guides, visit http://www.marinews.com/buy_a_boat/fishing-guides-listing.php.
  • Be safe when you are going out to the sea. Keep yourself updated with the latest weather report, wear life jackets, handling the heavy deep sea fishing tackles are not as easy it looks – handle them carefully.

Enjoyments of Fly Fishing

Fishing is one of the more pleasurable outdoor recreational activities. It's a great opportunity for a person to be out in the natural world, and sensing all of its visual delights. Fly fishing is a form of the traditional sport that many people have come to greatly enjoy. The United Kingdom is blessed with many places that are just right for a fishing enthusiast. There are some truly excellent fishing locations in places such as Scotland, the Lake District, and the Cotswolds. Believe it or not there's even some good fishing spots near Metropolitan London. These give the peace and serenity that a fisherman is looking for, and the chance to take part in a delightful outdoor hobby.
Some people have a hard time understanding why anyone would put on heavy wading boots and waders to go thrashing about in lakes and streams with expensive fishing equipment. There's a good chance that a fishing sportsman will spend a whole day in the water and not catch anything. So, why do it all? Anyone who loves fly fishing would probably chuckle at the question, and gladly share why he or she enjoys it so much.

Understanding The Technique

The sport is more than just putting a baited hook in the water. Indeed, it takes more than a little bit of skill to be successful. The fly rod is not an ordinary fishing pole but is designed to help fly fisher in his contest with the soon to be caught fish. The bait is no ordinary worm, but either a fly (hence the name of this type of fishing) or a lure designed to look like an ordinary meal for a lake or stream inhabitant. This is a very active sport and the sportsman does not just sit on the riverbank but is in the water perhaps up to his or her needs. Fly fishing requires actively moving the line and bait so as to mimic the motions of a fly or other type of insect. The sportsman is required to constantly cast the line and then it back, fooling the fish into thinking that the bait is an ordinary dinner landing and then taking off. The fish being stalked by the way are not little minnows. They are hearty sports fish like salmon or trout, weighing seven kilograms or more.
Enthusiasts know that once they have hooked the fish they will have a fight on their hands. Salmon or trout this size are at the top of the food chain in any stream or lake. They are not fooled easily and when hooked put up a great fight. It is perhaps this contest that is the most enjoyable part of the whole sport. It is man against fish, both fighting to see who will be the winner. The fishing rod is intentionally designed to take the strain of this lakefront combat, and the line is also of sterner than ordinary stuff. The human doesn't always win in such contests. It does happen that the line will break or the pole itself will snap. That is a risk that has to be taken when one is trying to catch a rather large fish. As one can expect, the sport takes more than ordinary skill. Many fishing locations in the United Kingdom offer lessons in fly fishing, and it's a good idea to have some instruction before seriously taking up the sport. After all, there will be a lot of time and expense involved.

Enjoying The Experience

The thrill of the contest should not take away from the truly great benefits of the sport. This has been commonly referred to as the sport of a contemplative man and the locations where it is enjoyed is testimony to that assertion. Anyone who's visited these locations would agree that tranquillity reigns in the atmosphere. Fishing streams and lakes afford some of the most serene geography to be found anywhere. Fishing at dawn's light is an activity of such great peace and calm that many stressed-out business professionals actively shop for just the right fishing equipment. This sport is truly a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the modern world.
The United Kingdom is dotted with fly fishing locations and there are a number of vacation packages for the sportsman who just wants to get away from it all. Equipment is not always cheap but it is durable. It's not unusual for the fishing rods to be handed down from generation to generation. The great outdoors beckons to us all in one way or another. This outdoor activity offers the challenge of a skilled encounter and the peace of a calm surrounding. It cannot get much better than that.
Mark Davies is a keen fisher (fly and line) and regularly participates in a number of other outdoor recreational activities when he's not working. If you like fly fishing too, you may also be interested to check out some of the best spots in the World for fly fishing.

More Reasons to Go Fishing

There are all sorts of reasons as to why people go fishing. Some go in search of food, some make a living out of it and some go just for the pleasure of it. Who enjoys it the most? The one fishing for pleasure, he has no pressure; even if he does not get a fish, he would only be a bit disappointed but would not have to face any adverse consequences.  It may apparently seem like a waste of time but the angler is sure to have a grand time on the waters.

Fishing is actually good for health. Yes, it keeps one’s mind off a certain mundane worries and stress of everyday life but that is not the only benefit. It is a physical exercise as well! In order to find that perfect fishing spot, one has to find that perfect little spot, which generally involves walking, hiking, climbing with the fishing gear in tow. This helps to burn a few calories and exercise the muscles. The knot tying, the spooling of the reel is a work out for the arms, fingers, forearms and wrists. Also attaching the rod, working the swivels, bait and sinkers get some muscles working. When you cast that bait in water the muscles of the upper arm, shoulder and back comes into play. It probably won’t give you six pack abs (as you have noticed) but it sure helps to maintain dexterity to a certain level.

It is good for the lungs as well. How you ask? Since it is an outdoor sport, it gives you an opportunity to get plenty of fresh air – healthy air in your lungs. The sun also has vitamin D that is essential for good skin but it is required to block the harmful UVA and UVB rays as well to prevent skin damage – hence always use a sun block.

Fishing does not require a lot of mental work if you have noticed. You attach some bait to a hook, cast it in the water and wait for the fish to take a bite.  This is the biggest health benefit of all. Your brain cells get to relax for a while. For some time your mind is not filled with deadlines, noisy machines, reports, meetings, work politics and so on. All you have is a free and relaxed mind, loads of fresh air, and sunshine. And add to it some yummy sandwiches, a thermos of coffee, or a jug of ice tea and you have got yourself a mini vacation!

Now the next time the wife gives you that look as you are leaving for a fishing trip, share with her what you just learned and things would never be the same. Trust me. Tight Lines!

Boat with a Midas touch

There is a common saying that goes “the two happiest days in a boat owner’s life are – the day he buys a boat and the day he sells it.” But if you buy a boat that costs some whopping millions (hypothetically), you would not want to sell it! Don’t look surprised. The most expensive boat or yacht to be precise would cost you…hold your breath… £3 billion!!

The British designed History Supreme is a 100 feet yacht, which is adorned with 100 tons of gold that covers more than half of her surface. This gold plated superyacht is the most expensive boat on the planet. The History Supreme has been designed by Liverpool jeweler Stuart Hughes who also had designed £5 million diamond wrapped iPhones, iPads and laptops. The boat has sleeping quarters covered in platinum and a statue made from the bone of the raptor Tyrannosaurus Rex!

Dining areas, rails, the deck and anchor are made from precious metals including meteoric stones and platinum. It took 3 years for the designer to build this yacht and he agrees that this yacht is his most ambitious project. The yacht has been built in Italy and completed in Malaysia in July 2011 and a Malaysian businessman, possibly Robert Kouk is now the proud owner.

It is tough to have a fancy menu on a boat, but with this easy but delicious crab omelet will take care of such cravings for a while. Here is what you need and how to make this for a healthy and hassle free breakfast.

To make crab omelet for two, you would need 8ounces of fresh or packed crab meat, 4 eggs, ¼ cup each of diced onion and bell pepper, 2 slices of bacon, 1 tablespoon of sun dried tomatoes, cheese, hollandaise sauce, and 2 table spoon of water.

Take the eggs and whip it in a bowl with 2 tablespoon of tepid water and set aside. It should come to room temperature. In a skillet, heat olive oil and sauté onion, peppers and tomatoes. When done, add the crab and heat thoroughly. Now remove it from heat and set aside. Cook the bacon till it is firm and crisp and also set aside. Pour additional oil in the pan and bring it to medium heat. Add eggs and cover. When the eggs begin to rise, add the crab mixture with the help of a spoon onto the eggs, don’t forget to crumble the bacon onto the mixture. Place a few cheese slices on top of the mixture. Cover and let it cook. Once done, slide the omelet onto a plate and flip to cover the crab. Pour hollandaise sauce over it and serve hot!

Your yummy crab omelet is ready! Your very own seafood breakfast- well not completely but technically.

Largemouth Bass Fishing on Jig Worms

Day-in and day-out, throughout the summer months, it's just tough to beat a plastic worm for largemouth bass. Worms are effective in deep water and shallow water, clear water or stained water. They come in large sizes and small sizes. Some worms have lots of action in the body and tail, others are more subtle in their motion. Plastic worms are just plain versatile fish-catching tools.
Just as worms are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, there are a number of ways they can be rigged. They can be Texas-rigged or Carolina-rigged. They can be hooked up weightless, weedless, or both. Of all the ways they can be rigged however, simply threading a plastic worm on a jighead is perhaps the most popular throughout much of the Midwest because it is so effective.

Here's How You Can Catch Bass on Jigworms

An eight ounce jighead is probably the most widely used size. The size casts well and sinks at about the right speed most of the time. Sometimes, like when the bass are suspended along the weedline, a sixteenth ounce head will be better. Lip-stick and Buck-Shot Rattle jigs are both good heads to try.
Throughout the summer, a seven inch worm will be really good. When conditions get tough, go with a four inch worm; when the bite is hot, go to a ten incher. On a recent Midwest fishing trip, the biggest bass came on ten inch worms.
When the bass are active, or in stained water, a worm with lots of action will generally trigger more strikes. There is a new worm out called the Sqwormer that was designed for maximum action. It seems to have more action than similarly constructed worms and has been fooling a lot of fish.
Six pound test XT line is great with jigworms, but sometimes it works well to go a tad heavier, maybe up to eight pound test. The eight pound test line is a little larger in diameter, which causes the jig to fall slower. The heavier line also allows us to put more pressure on the fish and get them away from the weedline. If you're concerned about the heavier line being more visible to the fish, try Vanish line. This is a new line that is virtually invisible to the fish.

Jigworms are Great for Largemouth Bass

But they will also take lots of walleyes, crappies, northern pike, even muskies if they're around. Get a selection of worms in various sizes and shapes in purple, black, blue, and red shad. There are other colors that do a good job also, but these will get you started. Then get out on the weedline, rig up a jigworm, and start casting. If you have done this before, you know how productive this technique can be. If you haven't, you will be in the process of learning a new technique that will help you land more fish throughout the summer.

How to Hire a Boat in Marseille, France

The city of Marseille is often described as a quiet, sleepy town on the water. In reality, however, Marseille is a vibrant destination that is the second most densely populated city in France after Paris. Founded by the Phoenicians in 600 BC, Marseille is an old city with a rich and historical heritage. Visitors can experience the best of France and the Mediterranean in this beautiful destination that boasts ancient ruins, spectacular architecture, beautiful beaches and much more. This is the reason why tourists in large number come to Marseille and various elite and low fare airlines provide regular services to Marseille.

Marseille's Connection to the Sea

Although there are hundreds of different ways for visitors to spend their time in Marseille, there is certainly an emphasis on boating in the area. The city has always had a strong connection to the sea thanks to its location along the Mediterranean Sea. The best views in Marseille are those that overlook the cliffs along the water while some of the most popular pastimes including renting a boat or even trying scuba diving in the beautiful waters.

Water transport is a popular way to get to and from Marseille as well as just to tour the region. For those interested in hiring a boat in Marseille, the rest of this article will detail the types of excursions an individual can choose from as well as why the water is so important to explore in Marseille.

Boating as Transport

Some people who visit the beautiful city of Marseille begin their trip by water. The large harbour in the city has several piers where tourists can arrive from nearby cities like Bastia or Porto Torres. Many people believe that the best way to first experience Marseille is from the water where there is a truly unique perspective to the city. The sixteen hour journey from Porto Torres to Marseille will cost roughly eighty Euros per person.

Within the city boating is used as a form of recreation more than transport, but there is one option that is the shortest commercial boat ride in Europe. Cross the Vieux Port, or old harbour, in just a few minutes by the large ferries that charge a very nominal fee.

The photo above shows a popular boating venue at Palais du Pharo Moussechan.

There are many boating operators in Marseille that will hire out boats to interest travellers looking to spend an afternoon or even a full day out on the water. It is one of the most popular pastimes for visitors enjoying South of France holidays in the region. Some boats come complete with a skipper and crew so that all the passengers need to do is relax and take in the stunning scenery.

Some sailing enthusiasts might prefer to take the boat on the water alone which is also a possibility. Take a day trip to the nearby Frioul Islands for a chance to get away from the business of the city for a day. Expect to pay anywhere from two hundred to one thousand Euros per day for a boat that fits more than two people.

Boating Holidays in Marseille

Although there are hundreds of stunning French holiday homes in Marseille and the surrounding region, many visitors still prefer to spend their entire trip on the water. There are many luxury yachts available for charter for several days or weeks at a time that let tourists to the area do just that. With a crew and a cabin large enough for four people expect to pay upwards of four thousand Euros each week.

Marseille is built up along the Mediterranean and no visit to the area would be complete without a boat hire at some point in the vacation. Visit the many piers of the old harbour to inquire about prices and which boat size is appropriate for you and your travel party.
